Tips on hiring a contractor
Are you looking
to hire a contractor for your next building project? Oregon
Builder Source was designed with you in mind. Listed are some
general tips that should point you in the right direction.
Note: All contractors
listed in our directory are licensed by the Oregon CCB and
include their CCB # in their listing. You can check a contractors
current status before hiring them by following this
link.
There are many types
of contractors from general contractors who can build any
project from a small home addition to a large commercial job.
Then there are specialty or trade contractors who specialize
in one or several related fields, such as plumbers and roofers.

Tips
- Before contacting contractors for your project, it's best
to first define what you are wanting them to bid on in detail.
Will your project involve more than one trade? If so, it
may be easier to hire a general contractor to schedule and
manage the different trades needed to complete your project.
If your project is rather simple, such as patching a hole
in a wall or replacing a light switch, then hiring them
directly will generally save you money.
- Ask neighbors, friends or relatives who have had recent
work done on their homes if they were satisfied with their
contractor.
- Request written quotes from several contractors in your
area. You can find them by searching our directory. When
you meet with them personally, ask any questions you have
and ask for referrences. After this, you will get a good
"feel" of how well a working relationship with
them will be.
- When signing a contract, make sure all the terms are
in writing and include:
- An exact description of the work
- A list of all the materials to be used
- Who is responsible for permits
- The total cost and a payment schedule
- Any warranties
- Projected start and completion date
- Signature of both parties
- While most construction projects are completed with both
parties satisfied, occasionally a problem may arrise. If
this happens, contact the job supervisor and express your
concern.
- Make sure to get any changes in design, materials, etc.
in writting so both parties are clear on the details of
the changes.
